Newport Friary | Newport, Wales

About

2016 | Newport Friary was commissioned by Newport City Council, in collaboration with Queensberry Real Estate. The design requirement was to create an attractive visual perforated barrier between the high street and the car park for the new Friary shopping centre. The chosen theme was intended to reflect the Chartist Movement in Newport which occurred in 1830’s. A Chartist poem titled ‘The March’ by Gillian Clarke (the National Poet of Wales 2008-16) was specially chosen as the central narrative that wove along the length of the panels. The overall length was approximately 60 metres. Laser cut steel, thermal zinc and powder-coated finish. The images also include other design features that were initially looked at for the Friary as part of the overall design strategy.
